What is The Church of Christ?
The churches of Christ (Romans 16:16) are a group of Christians
striving to follow the pattern for living and worship established by
Jesus
Christ and his Holy Spirit led apostles in the New Testament. We see
the Bible as without error, inspired word of God, and use it as our
only guide in religious matters. We are not a new group, but trace our
existence back to the time at which the church was first established on
the day of Pentecost after the ascention of Jesus back to heaven. At
the
present we number over 15,000 independent congregations throughout the
world.
Our Worship
The worship services are simple by most standards. Our worship is
for
the purpose of worshiping our God and spiritually building up those
who
attend so they might withstand Satan. Only vocal music is used in the
worship
service by choice, we feel this is following the example and
instruction
of God in the scripture. The Lord's Supper, or Communion, is observed
every
Sunday, again following the example and instruction of God in the
scripture.
In almost every service you will find periods of singing, prayer,
reading from the scripture and some type of lesson being presented from
God’s word.
Our Mission
The church of Christ is highly evangelical, personally obeying the
Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20; "Therefore go and make disciples
of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit: teaching them to obey everything I have
commanded you". This is our main purpose in serving our God through
our work, daily lives and service to our community.
Becoming a member of the church of Christ
Each individual becomes a member of the church when they are
baptized
by immersion into Christ after confessing that Jesus Christ is the Son
of
God and giving themselves in total submission to Him. Acts 2:38 tells
us,
“And Peter replied, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the
name
of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive
the
gift of the Holy Spirit.” They are added by God not man to His church.
It
is not a matter of being voted on or moving your letter, it is a matter
handled by God. Acts 2:47, “praising God, and enjoying the favor of all
the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were
saved.” After becoming a Christian you are then expected to try your
best to live as an example to others. This may mean changing some
things in your life, God expects you to spend time with other
members of Christ’s church, studying and worshiping God and learning
to leave things alone which God tells us are wrong. Acts 2:46 “Every
day, they continued to meet together in the temple court. They broke
bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts..”
Church Leadership
In keeping with the New Testament pattern, there is no authority
above the independent local congregations. Each congregation is led by
elders selected by the members of that congregation. Deacons perform
various ministries under the supervision of the elders and as approved
by the congregation. If the congregation has not grown large enough to
appoint elders the congregation is directed by a general meeting of
the membership. The minister or preacher has no more authority than
anyone else in the congregation to make decisions for the church.
